The One Advantage Everyone Can Access (And Why It’s Worth It)
There’s a powerful advantage available to everyone. It doesn’t require any investment of time or money, yet it has the potential to radically improve your quality of life.
That advantage is gratitude.
Now, let’s be honest—cultivating a posture of gratitude isn’t easy. It’s tough. It demands discipline in both our thoughts and emotions.
But here’s the thing: gratitude that’s anchored in a healthy and secure identity is, in my experience, all upside. Never once have I thought, “You know, I should have approached that situation with a little less gratitude. I’d be much happier now.”
No. Gratitude always adds value.
This is a lesson I have to remind myself of constantly. When I do, here are a few truths I try to hold onto:
Don’t Complain About the Complexities That Come with Blessings
Often, the things that bless our lives—a new job, a new relationship, a new opportunity—come with their own set of demands on our time and energy. It’s easy to get caught up in the complexities and forget to be grateful for the blessing itself. I try to remind myself not to complain about the challenges that come as a result of the good things in my life.
Life Doesn’t Owe You Anything
Entitlement is a gratitude killer. And yet, it’s so easy to slip into an entitled mindset. But here’s the truth: nothing in life—whether it’s in your career, relationships, finances, or anything else—is automatically owed to you. Anything good that comes your way is a chance to be grateful.
You’re Already Fortunate
If you’re reading this on the internet, then like me, you:
Can read.
Have access to the internet.
Have access to an internet-enabled device.
That alone puts you in a position of good fortune. It’s worth remembering how privileged we are to have these basic resources.
Choosing Gratitude Is Always Better
Choosing to be grateful makes us happier. It makes us more likely to be a blessing to those around us. It improves our physical and psychological health. Ultimately, it’s just a better way to live.
As we strive to cultivate lives that honor what matters most, being deliberate about nurturing a mentality of gratitude is an advantage worth pursuing. Gratitude isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a game-changer.
